Summer is a season full of sunshine, adventures, and outdoor funābut for our four-legged friends, the heat can pose some serious risks. Whether your pup loves long walks, park playdates, or lounging in the backyard, itās important to keep their safety top of mind as temperatures rise. Here are our top summer safety tips to keep your dog healthy, happy, and cool all season long!
1. Hydration is a Must š§
Dogs canāt tell us when theyāre thirsty, so itās up to us to ensure they have constant access to fresh, cool water. Whether you're going for a hike or just spending time outside, bring a collapsible bowl and extra water with you. Add a few ice cubes to their bowl at home for a refreshing bonus treat!
2. Beware of Hot Pavement š„š¾
If the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it's definitely too hot for your dog's paws. Try to walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when sidewalks are cooler. You can also invest in protective dog booties or stick to grassy areas to help prevent burns and discomfort.
3. Know the Signs of Heatstroke š¶ā
Heatstroke is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that can sneak up fast. Warning signs include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, and bright red gums. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, move them to a cool area immediately, offer water, and contact your vet.
4. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car šā
Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can skyrocket in minutes. Cracking the window is not enough. Leaving a dog in a hot car, even for a āquick minute,ā can lead to fatal heatstroke. When running errands, it's always safest to leave your pup at home.
5. Provide Shade & Breaks šļøš
Whether you're at the park or your backyard, make sure your dog has access to shaded areas. Consider bringing a pop-up canopy or umbrella to create a cool retreat. And donāt overdo playtimeāencourage frequent breaks to rest and cool down.
6. Summer Grooming Tips āļøāļø
While it might seem like a good idea to shave your dog to help them stay cool, some breeds rely on their coats for insulation. Instead, opt for regular brushing to remove excess fur and prevent matting. Talk to our groomer about whatās best for your dogās specific coat type during the hot months.
With a little preparation and mindfulness, summer can be a fun and safe time for you and your pup! Keep these tips in mind, and youāll both be ready to soak up the sunshineāsafely. š¾š
