A Paws-itively Thankful Thanksgiving: Celebrating the Holiday with Your Dog

Thanksgiving is a time for gratitude, family, and—of course—food! As we gather around the table to enjoy turkey, mashed potatoes, and all the fixings, it’s important not to forget about our four-legged family members. Our dogs bring us joy, companionship, and unconditional love all year long, and this holiday is the perfect time to show them just how thankful we are.

One of the easiest ways to include your dog in Thanksgiving celebrations is through safe, dog-friendly treats. While the table might be full of tempting aromas, not every dish is good for pups. Plain turkey (without skin or seasoning) is a great option, as long as it’s free from bones. You can also offer small portions of cooked sweet potato, pumpkin, or green beans—but skip anything with butter, salt, onions, or garlic.

If you’re feeling crafty, consider baking homemade Thanksgiving dog treats! A simple mix of pumpkin purée, oat flour, and a little peanut butter can turn into delicious, wholesome snacks your dog will love. Shaping them like tiny turkeys or pumpkins adds an extra festive touch. Baking these treats together can even be a fun family activity that includes your kids and pets alike.

Of course, Thanksgiving can be hectic, and the extra noise and guests may overwhelm some dogs. Make sure your pup has a quiet, cozy space to retreat to if things get too loud. Set up a bed or crate in a calm corner, and keep their favorite toys or blankets nearby. This little sanctuary helps them feel secure while everyone else is bustling about.

Another thing to keep in mind is safety—especially when it comes to food and decorations. Keep trash cans closed tightly, as turkey bones, corn cobs, and fatty scraps can cause serious health issues. Candles, string lights, and centerpieces can also be hazards if your curious pup decides to explore the dinner setup a little too closely!

Thanksgiving is also a great opportunity to reflect on what your dog means to you. Maybe they helped you through a tough year, made you laugh when you needed it most, or just provided endless cuddles and tail wags. Sharing your gratitude with them—whether through extra playtime, a long walk, or a cozy nap together—can be one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate.

If you want to take things a step further, consider giving back in your dog’s honor. Donate food or blankets to a local animal shelter, volunteer your time, or share posts about adoptable dogs on social media. Helping other animals find homes and happiness is a wonderful way to spread the spirit of Thanksgiving beyond your own household.

This Thanksgiving, let’s remember that our dogs are more than just pets—they’re family. Whether they’re sneaking a bite of turkey or snoozing under the table, they deserve to be part of the gratitude and love that fill our homes. From all of us at Pawsitive Pals, we wish you and your furry friends a tail-wagging, treat-filled, and truly thankful Thanksgiving!
